Who killed high speed rail?

What is keeping High speed rail from getting built in the US? The obvious advantages like improving the economy, bringing life to distant towns, and adding jobs are overwhelming. I suppose the usual suspects are: The airline industry, the aircraft manufacturers.. which the US leads in, politicians, and Real Estate developers in their respective districts (high speed rail would significantly alter real estate value, shifting the balance of assets from airport locations to wherever the train stations pop up. It could also reduce the ridiculous prices in large cities by decreasing distance/travel time. The debate is open. Who do you think killed high speed rail?
